The OpenBeacon project was founded in 2006 by the Berlin located company Bitmanufaktur GmbH as an open platform for active RFID applications operating in the license free 2.4GHz ISM band. OpenBeacon is based on Open Source software and a very flexible and reprogrammable lowcost Open Source RFmodule. The firmware sources and hardware schematics are available under GPL license. We encourage the development of new ideas for OpenBeacon setups and firmware improvements.

Depuis quelques jours, mes follow-ers/ings Twitter (j’ai réactivé mon compte @arthurdev il y a peu) relaient très fortement le compte-rendu, écrit par Hubert Guillaud, de la communication réalisée par Saskia Sassen lors du Lift 2011 qui s’est tenu à Marseille le 7 juillet dernier, communication consacrée au devenir des « villes intelligentes ». Face à cet engouement, j’ai bien sûr eu envie de jouer les empêcheurs de tourner en rond…

In order for open source hardware to become as prevelant and influential in the hardware community as FOSS is in the software community we need a way to integrate the required services into a single system, as well as provide a destination for users looking for open source hardware projects to build or to extend to get involved in the community.
