Part.Public.Part.Lab grows out of recent work in three areas: 1) recent research in science and technology studies on public participation and public engagement; 2) studies of open source, open innovation, free software and the explosion of related “user-generated” projects and problems from web 2.0 to wikileaks; and 3) an aliquot of organizational theory as it relates to knowledge production, circulation and governance. The lab exists to foster discussions and research at the intersection of these areas and to explore both the theoretical implications of the changing nature of participation and the empirical cases and concerns of actors involved in trying to make participation occur, or occur differently.

Le Projet OpenLab se situe dans le contexte très général d’ouverture des nanosciences au sein de la société. Il se concentre, en particulier, sur l’apport, souvent mis à l’écart par les non-spécialistes, de la chimie aux nanosciences. Le projet OpenLab vise à impliquer l’art contemporain, dans ses formes les plus variées : aide à l’expression, transfert des connaissances et catalyseur au débat. L’ouverture des laboratoires, d’où le nom du projet OpenLab, est un point essentiel synonyme d’envie de communication et de transparence. Cette approche permet de communiquer de manière efficace sur une thématique aussi complexe et controversée. Du point de vue de la création artistique, ce projet offre un nombre important de perspectives nouvelles aux artistes dans le domaine de la chimie et en relation avec les nanosciences.
